The Implementing Sustainable Low and Non-Chemical Development in Small Island Developing States (ISLANDS) programme seeks to address the sound management of chemicals and waste in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). This ISLANDS programme covers four (4) geographical regions including the Caribbean, Indian Ocean, Pacific Islands, and Atlantic Ocean Islands, and is being implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The Basel Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the Caribbean (BCRC-Caribbean) is currently executing two (2) Caribbean Child projects (GEF 10279 and GEF 10472) which involve twelve (12) countries – Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

In the Caribbean region, chemicals and products containing chemicals are imported into many of these projectcountries for use, however, there is limited appropriate disposal mechanisms or facilities within the region for the environmentally sound management (ESM) of obsolete chemicals and products. These legacy chemicals and products containing hazardous chemicals are often stockpiled while waiting for the opportunity for final disposal or export.

To this end, Activity 2.1.1 under the GEF ISLANDS Caribbean Projects aims to develop management and disposalstrategies to eliminate PCBs, obsolete pesticides and chemicals including DDT, POP-PBDEs and HBCD in Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and stabilisation strategies for selected mercury–added products.

In this regard, the BCRC-Caribbean is seeking to recruit a suitably qualified and experienced consulting team to work with us on executing the project activity.
