About this Group

The Economic Transformation for Development (ET4D) Working Group is a community of persons from leading think tanks, development institutions and initiatives, who are interested in transformative approaches and models for use in economic development interventions. The Working Group is envisioned to be a vibrant community of leading experts, practitioners, researchers, and other stakeholders who are willing to exchange news, ideas or insights, and project examples related to sustainable economic transformation. The Working Group builds on a dialogue series jointly initiated in 2021 by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and Think Tanks within the Partners for Inclusive Green Economy (PIGE) and the Global Solutions Initiative (GSI) network.

Our vision is to leverage our past and future discussions to compile good practices and recommendations for development interventions, and thus turn abstract ideas into practical approaches leading to multiple benefits for the countries impacted by our work.

The Working Group meets on a bi-monthly basis (starting from January 2022) through organized workshops with an external facilitator. Most of the co-creation and joint work will happen in so called ET4D Communities which structure the broad topic of economic transformation along priority areas set by the members of the Working Group. In 2022, six ET4D Communities have been created, i.e. Green-Social Nexus, Finance for low- and middle-income countries, Economic Participation, Institutional Change, Regional Collaboration for Economic Transformation, and Alternative purpose and operations of business and enterprises. Members are expected to join one to two ET4D Communities (of which members are expected to primarily work in one).

Throughout the workshops and in the ET4D Communities members are expected to find answers to the following exemplary guiding questions:

  • How can economic development cooperation unleash transformation and translate it into real benefits for countries?
  • What are leverage points for economic transformation in countries?
  • In which sectors, countries or regions is economic transformation already happening?
  • Which trade-offs or synergies between development targets of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Climate Agreement in relation to economic development exist and how can transformative approaches and methods help in solving or supporting those?
  • How can the insights and learnings on economic transformation be leveraged to support multilateralism and international cooperation?

As a result of the discussion, members will have the unique opportunity to co-create recommendations and feed them into the policy platforms of the Global Solutions Initiative, a stepping stone to the G20 and T20 Summits, as well as partake in an INTERSECTING e-book publication on economic transformation.
