About this Discussion

Food and agriculture production systems worldwide are facing unprecedented challenges from an increasing demand for food for a growing population, rising hunger and malnutrition, adverse climate change effects, over-exploitation of natural resources, loss of biodiversity, and food loss and waste. These challenges can undermine the world’s capacity to meet its food needs. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), more than 800 million people are undernourished while 2 billion are micronutrient deficient and 2 billion more people overweight or obese. At the same time, food production, transportation, processing and waste are putting unsustainable strain on environmental resources.

To be sustainable, agriculture must meet the needs of present and future generations, while ensuring profitability, environmental health, and social and economic equity. Greening the agricultural sector involves addressing poverty as well as meeting the nutritional needs of a growing global population while also minimizing the environmental degradation associated with certain agricultural practices.

Achieving these goals requires a transformation of the agriculture sector, leveraging market-based approaches through a coordinated effort by all stakeholders, including farmers, government, civil society and the private sector.

Call for Applications: The Sustainable AgTech Challenge

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and The Yield Lab Institute aim to identify AgTech Startups, with a scalable business model, that can tackle some of the most pressing issues of climate change in agri-food systems in the Latin America and Caribbean region (LAC).

Agriculture and food systems in Latin America and the Caribbean Region (LAC) are rightfully recognized as among the most successful on the planet: they have fed a fast-growing population, facilitated economic development, enabled urbanization, generated substantial exports, and helped drive down global hunger and poverty.

The call for this challenge is aimed at innovations and startups with products, services and/or technologies that are contributing to fight the causes and impacts of climate change, thus creating more regenerative, sustainable and inclusive agrifood systems.

Join the AgTech revolution and apply to the Sustainable AgTech Challenge before July 7th 2021.

As policymakers prepare for the CBD COP 15 (Kunming, 11-24 October 2021), Co-Chairs of the UNEP/International Resource Panel have published science-based principles to help them move beyond pledges and commitments.

The report features four principles to turn biodiversity loss into biodiversity value through Natural Resource Management:

- Know your true impact - Value-chain transparency
- Plan together - Integrated landscape planning
- Grow with nature - Nature-based and circular solutions
- Value nature - Recognize nature’s benefits

Those principles are also illustrated by a selection of case studies implemented successfully around the world.
