Update on the Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC)

The Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC)—adopted in 2023—establishes a global roadmap for sound chemicals and waste management with five strategic objectives and 28 measurable targets. It unites governments, industry, civil society, and partners to reduce harmful chemical impacts, promote safer alternatives, and protect human and environmental health.

A major milestone took place recently in Punta del Este, Uruguay, with the inaugural meeting of the GFC’s Open‑Ended Working Group (OEWG), held from 24–27 June 2025. Over 600 participants from across sectors came together to align on priorities, mobilize resources, and build momentum for implementation.

Plastics are integral to agricultural systems, with an estimated 12.5 million tonnes used annually. The demand for greenhouse, mulching, and silage films is projected to grow by 50% between 2018 and 2030. However, the extensive use of plastics has led to significant soil pollution, including microplastic contamination, and damaged soil health by altering its structure, bulk density, and water-holding capacity.

Data suggest that, despite their extensive use, only a small fraction ...

Dear Community members,

I would like to share with you the link below for (02) international call for tenders under the ISLANDS Atalantic project 10848:
1-A Communications expert who is in charge of all communications part of the project in collaboration with all stakeholders.
2-A Youth engagement consultant and communication for the Tide Turners Challenge Programme (TTCP), as you may know the TTCP is an initiative of UNEP already implemented in some countries. This programme requires a strong involvement of young people (18-35 years old) to address the plastic pollution issue particularly the pollution of microplastic in marine litter.
I hope this international call for tenders will benefit all the young experts deeply involved on the platform.
N.B: The submission deadline is July 02, 2025 at 23:59 p.m UTC.

Kind regards.
